Smokey Bear was born on August 9, 1944, when the U.S. Forest Service decided that a fictional bear could be the symbol for their effort to prevent forest fires and hired artist Albert Staehle to paint the first poster. In spring 1950, fire fighters battling a forest fire in New Mexico found a bear cub who had taken refuge in a tree, was badly burned, but managed to stay alive. Moved by his bravery, the firefighters named him Smokey. News about Smokey spread across the US and he was given a home at the National Zoo. Smokey died in 1976 and was returned to New Mexico, where he is buried in the Capitan State Historical Park. Today, as wildfires rage in the West, Smokey’s environmental message is more important than ever: “Only You Can Prevent Wild Fires”!
