In 2010, Firecrest® set a new standard for speed. Our mathematically derived rim shape marked a new age in wheel design allowing all of us to go faster through greater aerodynamic performance and stability in a bicycle wheel.

Our 2014 Firestrike design, which draws on the same rim patent used in Firecrest, marks the next evolution. We started with our venerable 404 wheelset, added our all-new Showstopper™ brake track technology and packed in a host of technological advancements to create the most advanced and highest performing wheelset in our 26 year history.

Having set the bar on achievable aero efficiency in crosswinds, Zipp's Firecrest rim revolutionized how rims should perform in ever-changing windy conditions. The all-new Firestrike rim is the latest technology built on the same rim patent used in Firecrest. Using Firecrest as a building block, our engineers continued to develop around the principle technologies that made the rim shape great:

  1. Optimizing the rim ID to act as the second leading edge, improving the overall wheel system efficiency in cross winds
  2. Controlling the shedding frequency, resulting in better rider control
  3. Moving the rim system's center of pressure closer to the bike’s steering axis


The evolutionary Firestrike rim profile has a slightly more blunt ID, improving its aero stability across back half of the wheel. When compared with Firecrest, the new modified ID (inside diameter) geometry of Firestrike allows the leading edge of the profile to keep air attached longer thus further easing the transition to the sidewall. Like it’s Firecrest predecessor, Firestrike continues to produce industry leading low drag across all wind angles.

In designing Firestrike, the engineers have looked at how the wheel fits within the bike system holistically. It's not enough to design a wheel with low drag numbers. It is more about how the wheel interacts symbiotically with you and the bike. The best wheel is one that strikes a fine balance between aero efficiency and aero stability. 

In 1992 Zipp implemented a light media blast process to abrade the resin on the braking surface on the 400 and 440 rims. This exclusive feature resulted in improved modulation and increased stopping power. After 2 years of prototyping, extensive testing, introducing new materials, and modifying existing manufacturing processes we can introduce Showstopper™ brake track technology. Showstopper™ is a complimenting pairing of a directional, molded-in, texture with silicon carbide particles suspended in the surface resin. The current media blast process applied to all Zipp rims increases the surface roughness of the brake track providing the rider with consistent and responsive braking. In order to improve this for the wettest of rides, we have introduced a molded-in groove specifically tuned for the Zipp Tangente Platinum Pro EVO Brake Pad. The grooves have been optimized to interact with leading edge (relative to the rotation of the wheel) of the brake pad and the four cooling channels. The leading edge of the pad and first two channels efficiently wipe water and debris outward, cleaning and drying the braking surface, while the second two cooling channels have maximum interference with the grooves allowing greater braking force than a smooth rim. The cleaning effects of the groove and pad interaction improve brake feel and consistency even in dry condition.


Composite Technologies:
If 20 years of making carbon fiber wheels have taught us anything, it's that aerodynamics don't have to come at the expense of strength, durability, or comfort. Especially not with the VCLC,™ M2CM,™ and Carbon Bridge™ technologies included Zipp carbon wheels.

Hub Technologies:
Even the most aero wheelset doesn't help much on a climb. The lightest crankset won't improve your descending. The stiffest stem won't make you faster on the flats. But the world's best hubs deliver a little bit of extra speed, every second of every ride. That's why Zipp builds them into all our wheels.
The 88 front and 188 rear hubs utilize cutting-edge technologies that, within the bike industry, are unique to Zipp. The improved 188 hub, available in October 2011, was redesigned to move out the bearings, improving durability and creating a 6 percent stiffer wheel, built with the same spoke tension. The 88/188 hubs are offered in two colors, “falcon gray” and “beyond black,” across the wheel line. The silver and ZedTech hub 88/188 hub versions are discontinued. Also of note, the rear 188 hub shell and axle are not compatible with the earlier silver version. The bearings (61803), clinch nuts, retaining rings, end caps and seals remain unchanged.
SI3N4 Ceramic Bearings

For years, we've been the only hub manufacturer using Swiss-made bearings that are two and a half times rounder than any others in the bike industry - rounder even than many ceramic bearings. But for the 88 and 188, we added adjustable preload and switched to a slightly larger size that gives us room for a 17mm diameter axle, the stiffest in any road hub. The new bearings also yield a 28% higher load capacity, improve durability, and will save you a watt or two relative to the competition, regardless of conditions. If you upgrade to Si3N4 Ceramic Bearings, know that you'll be getting Grade 2 balls, the finest available, with tolerances less than 2 millionths of an inch per set of 15 bearings.

All Zipp hub internals are manufactured using a high-voltage wire EDM technology so specialized and expensive it is usually reserved for making avionics components, Formula1 gearboxes, and orthopedic joints. This technique lets us machine 50% harder materials at tolerances 20 times greater than standard machining and heat treating. The result is a sub-200g hub that can handle the torque of a 4-cylinder car engine. Obviously, we think you're worth the trouble.
Spoke Hole Impact Forming (SHIFT™)

Each wheelset actually features a slightly different spoke flange design to match the rim depth and allow for more balanced rear spoke tension. All flanges features our Spoke Hole Impact Forming (SHIFT™) strengthens the spoke-hub interface by forging each spoke hole in a proprietary alloy that we developed specially with Alcoa.
